Dr Samia Ben Sassi is professor of neurology at the University Tunis El Manar and head of neurology department at the Mongi Ben Hmida National Institute of neurology. She completed her medical studies and her residency in neurology at the faculty of medicine of Tunis. She had a fellowship in Neurophysiology at the University Pierre and Marie Curie and trained in Pitié-Salpétrière and Lariboisière hospitals in Paris. She is also certified in statistical methods and epidemiology and in medical genetics and genomics. Dr Ben Sassi has been involved in the study of neurodegenerative diseases, especially Parkinson’s disease funded by various national and international agencies such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the European commission, with published findings in international journals.
Dr Ben Sassi is founder and current president of the Tunisian Association of Neurology and Neurosciences. She has been a member of IBRO-MENA and an associated member of IBRO-ARC executive committees. Dr Ben Sassi is currently a member of GP2 and of the AfrAbia-PD Genomic Consortium as well as of the LRRK2 Cohort Consortium. Presently, she is treasurer of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS)-African section. She served as director and faculty in several MDS-Africa movement disorders schools and virtual professor programs intended for English and French speaking clinicians in Africa. She served also as a faculty in international MDS congresses. She has been a member of the MDS-AS educational committee and is currently a member of the MDS Dystonia Study Group Steering Committee and of the MDS Publication Oversight Committee.
